Starring Matt Damon, Emily Blunt , Terrence Stamp,Anthony Mackie

The Adjustment Bureau is based on the short story by Philip K Dick “The Adjustment Team”
In the film , Matt Damon is a senatorial candidate on track for election, but a series of seemingly chance events leads him to an election night loss and a meeting with “Elise” ( played by Emily Blunt ) in the men’s room of the Waldorf. Their attraction to each other is instant and strong. After losing touch, he again meets her by chance and gets her number, but higher powers are at work to keep them apart. Their is “a plan” and the Adjustment Bureau must make sure that the Chairman’s wishes are carried out.
So, obviously The Adjustment Bureau are angels, The Chairman is God and our star crossed lovers are star crossed. There’s is a nice premise here, and the notion that we have had our free will removed because every time we are in charge we muck it up. Under the Bureau’s guidance, the Renaissance, the age of enlightenment. When we are in charge, the dark ages and two world wars.
The idea here is that without each other, both will succeed in their chosen professions beyond their wildest dreams. With each other, neither will meet their potential. What the Bureau fail to realise is that only together can they be who they are meant to be.
Nice idea, reasonably well executed. Terrence Stamp is his usual quietly menancing self, Anthony Mackie is excellent and the sympathetic and non conformist Harry. Emily Blunt is at turn charming and bewildered. Matt Damon gives a pretty convincing performance of a man who will give up all for what he needs for the sake of what he “should” have.
All in a all, a reasonable way to spend 90 mins.
